The laptop keyboard is one of the most vulnerable places: it collects dust, crumbs, hair and often becomes a victim of spilled drinks. Over time, the keys begin to stick, and pressing is accompanied by an unpleasant crunch. But keyboard cleaning - a risky task: one wrong step can damage the entire motherboard. How to clean it effective and safe?
In this article we will look at three rinsing methods - from superficial cleaning to deep disassembly, suitable for different types of dirt. You will learn which tools to use for Lenovo ThinkPad, MacBook Pro or ASUS ROG, how to avoid corrosion of contacts and what to do if the keyboard no longer responds to presses. And also - why alcohol and wet wipes can make the problem worse if used incorrectly.
1. When does the keyboard need to be washed, and when is it enough to wipe it?
Not every pollution requires complete flushing. Sometimes a superficial cleaning is enough. Let's figure out in what cases which method to use:
- 🧹 Dust and crumbs: Compressed air or a soft brush is sufficient. No flushing required.
- ☕ Spilled drinks (tea, coffee, juice): if the liquid is not sticky or sugary, you can get by with local cleaning with a napkin. But if the keys start to stick, they will need to be washed.
- 🍯 Sticky substances (honey, jam, soda): Here you can’t do without washing - the sugar crystallizes and blocks the key mechanism.
- 🦠 Bacteria and mold: if the keyboard has not been cleaned for a long time and an unpleasant odor appears, deep disinfection with washing is needed.
If you spilled on your keyboard water, right away turn off the laptop, turn it over and let the liquid drain. Do not turn on the device at least 12–24 hours - even if everything is dry on the outside. In case sweet drinks or milk drying time increases to 48 hours, since sugars and fats leave a film on the contacts.
⚠️ Attention: If after a liquid spill the laptop does not turn on or the keyboard does not respond, don't try to wash it yourself - it may be a short circuit on the motherboard. Contact the service center.

2. Preparing for washing: what you need and how to avoid mistakes
Before you start washing, unplug the laptop: Remove the battery (if it is removable) and disconnect the power supply. If the battery is built-in (as in MacBook or Dell XPS), hold the power button 10–15 secondsto discharge the remaining charge.
Here is a complete list of tools and materials:
| Tool | Purpose | Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Isopropyl alcohol (90%+) | Dissolves fat, disinfects, evaporates quickly | Rubbing alcohol (70%), but take longer to dry |
| Distilled water | To remove sugar/salt (only for removable keyboards!) | Boiled water (as a last resort) |
| Soft brush (for example, for makeup) | Removing dust from under the keys | Soft bristle toothbrush |
| Plastic pick or bottle opener | Removing keys without damage | Flathead screwdriver (wrapped with tape) |
| Microfiber cloth | Lint-free drying | Cotton fabric (not terry!) |
What not to do:
- 🚫Use household glass cleaner - He leaves the film.
- 🚫 Wash the keyboard under running water — pressure can damage the membranes.
- 🚫 Dry with a hairdryer - hot air deforms the plastic of the keys.
- 🚫Apply acetone or thinner — they destroy the key markings.

Take a photo of the location of the keys (if you will be filming)|
Prepare your work area (clean surface, good lighting)|
Check if the keyboard is removable (for deep cleaning) -->
3. Method 1: Surface cleaning without disassembly (for light soiling)
This method is suitable if the keyboard got dusty or some water/tea was spilled on it no more than an hour ago. It does not require disassembly and takes 10–20 minutes.
Step 1: Remove Crumbs and Dust
Turn the laptop at an angle 45–60 degrees and gently tap the back cover to release debris. Then use compressed air (spray can or vacuum cleaner at minimum power). Keep the can upright to avoid spraying liquid!
Step 2. Wet cleaning
Moisten microfiber cloth in isopropyl alcohol (do not drip directly onto the keyboard!). Wipe down the keys and spaces between them. For hard-to-reach places, use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol. Do not press hard - the membranes under the keys are fragile!
Step 3. Drying
Leave your laptop in vertical position (for example, leaning on the edge of a table) on 2–4 hours. Can be used silica gel (bags from shoe boxes) to speed up the process.
If the keys begin to “squeak” after cleaning, apply a drop of silicone grease (For example, WD-40 Specialist) onto the mechanism under the key. Don't use oils - they attract dust!
4. Method 2: Deep cleaning with key removal (for sticky dirt)
If the keyboard sticks or on the keys there is dried sticky spots, superficial cleaning is not enough. You will need to remove the keys and wash them separately. This method doesn't fit for laptops with chiclet keyboards (For example, MacBook 2015+ or HP Spectre), where the keys are soldered to the membrane.
Step 1: Removing the Keys
Insert a plastic pick under the corner of the key and gently pry it up. Start with large keys (For example, Space or Shift), as they usually have metal hooks. Under the key you will see rubber dome (for membrane keyboards) or mechanical switch (in gaming laptops).
How to remove keys on MacBook (2015–2020)
On these models, the keys are glued to the butterfly mechanism. Removing it yourself may cause damage! Better to use special tool (For example, iFixit Keycap Puller) or contact service.
Step 2: Cleaning the Keys
Place the removed keys in a container with warm distilled water and add a few drops of dish soap. Wash them gently with a soft brush, then rinse and dry on a cloth. For mechanisms under the keys use only isopropyl alcohol - it leaves no traces.
Step 3: Clean the base
Soak a cotton swab in alcohol and wipe contact pads on the membrane. If there are traces of corrosion (green coating), use pencil eraser - it will gently remove oxides. Don't rub too hard!
Step 4. Assembly
Reinstall the keys starting from little ones (for example, alphabetic ones). Press until you hear a click - this means that the holds are seated correctly. Large keys (eg. Enter) have metal stabilizer - first secure it, then the key itself.
⚠️ Attention: If after assembly the key fails or does not return to its original position, this means you have installed the rubber dome or stabilizer incorrectly. Disassemble it again and check the fastenings.
5. Method 3: Cleaning the removable keyboard (for laptops with a modular design)
Some laptops (eg. Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell Latitude or HP EliteBook) have removable keyboard, which connects to the motherboard via a cable. This makes cleaning easier, but requires careful removal.
Step 1: Disable the keyboard
Remove the back cover of the laptop (usually it is secured with screws Phillips #00). Find the keyboard cable - it looks like a flat ribbon connected to a connector. Carefully remove it by prying black latch (do not pull the wires!).
Step 2: Flush the module
Place the keyboard in a container with distilled water on 10–15 minutes, then use a soft brush to remove dirt. For sticky spots use alcohol. Do not rub the membrane too hard; it may tear.
Step 3. Drying and assembly
Blot the keyboard with a napkin and leave it to dry. 24–48 hours in a well-ventilated place. You can use the fan on minimum speed, but do not point it directly at the membrane. After complete drying, reconnect the cable and reassemble the laptop.
1) Is the cable connected correctly (sometimes it moves during assembly).
2) Is there any moisture under the membrane (even drops can cause a short circuit).
3) Is the membrane itself damaged (if so, replacement will be required).-->
6. What to do if the keyboard does not work after washing
If after all key manipulations can't be pressed, repeat symbols or don't react at all, the reasons may be as follows:
- 💧 Residual moisture: even if everything is dry on the outside, condensation could remain under the membrane. Give me more 24 hours to dry.
- 🔌 The cable is damaged: If you pulled it hard when disconnecting it, the contacts could come off. Check under a microscope.
- 🔄 Incorrect assembly: If the rubber domes or stabilizers are installed crookedly, the keys will stick.
- ⚡ Short circuit: If the spilled liquid was sweet or salty, it could oxidize the contacts on the board.
Diagnostics:
- Connect external keyboard via USB. If it works, the problem is in the laptop keyboard itself.
- Go to
BIOS(clickF2/Delwhen loading). If the keyboard does not work there too, the problem is at the hardware level. - Check in
Device Manager(Windows): If your keyboard has a yellow triangle, update your driver.
If the keyboard partially working (for example, only some keys cannot be pressed), most likely damaged membrane or contact pad. In this case, only replacing the keyboard will help.
7. Prevention: how to protect your keyboard from dirt
The best way to avoid flushing is avoid heavy contamination. Here are some proven methods:
- 🛡️ Use silicone case (For example, Keyboard Cover for MacBook). It protects against dust and splashes without interfering with your typing.
- 🍵 Don't eat/drink over the keyboard. If you can't do without it, use tray with sides.
- 🧲 Clean your keyboard regularly with a vacuum cleaner (once a month). A small USB vacuum cleaner will do.
- 🔄 Turn your laptop over after use, so that the crumbs fall out on their own.
- 💻 Use an external keyboard for working at home - this way the main one will stay clean longer.
For gaming laptops (For example, ASUS TUF or MSI GE) with mechanical keys recommended once every six months Remove the keys and clean the switches with compressed air. This will prevent dust accumulation and prolong service life.
If you often work in dusty environments (such as a construction site or workshop), apply a sticker to your keyboard transparent film (For example, 3M Scotchcal). It will protect against small particles and is easy to clean.
FAQ: Frequently asked questions about cleaning the keyboard
Is it possible to wash a laptop keyboard with water?
Distilled water can be used only for detachable keyboards, which are completely disconnected from the laptop. For non-removable keyboards, water is dangerous - it can leak under the membrane and cause corrosion. Better to use isopropyl alcohol.
How long does it take to dry the keyboard after washing?
Minimum 12 o'clock for surface cleaning and 24–48 hours for deep washing with removal of keys. If the liquid was sweet (juice, soda), drying may take up to 72 hours. You can speed up the process using silica gel or fan at minimum speed.
How to clean MacBook keyboard (2015–2020 models)?
Keyboards MacBook with butterfly mechanism cannot be disassembled by yourself - they are very fragile. Use compressed air to remove dust and alcohol wipe for surface cleaning. If the keys are sticking, contact your Apple Service — they will replace the keyboard free of charge under the support program (for models 2015–2019).
Why did the keys become stiff after washing?
This happens if:
- Rubber domes not completely dry and became sticky.
- you used oil or fatty solution for cleaning.
- Key mechanism clogged with dust after assembly.
Solution: disassemble the keys again, wash the domes in alcohol and dry thoroughly.
Can I use a hair dryer to dry my keyboard?
No, hot air deforms plastic keys and can melt the membrane. If you need to speed up drying, use fan at minimum speed or silica gel (shoe bags). The air temperature should not exceed 30–35°C.
